FloraGLO® Lutein and the Eyes
Numerous peer-reviewed studies link the important eye-health benefits of the natural antioxidant lutein—sometimes referred to as the “eye protective nutrient.” The aging process can be associated with age-related macular degeneration 1-3 and other serious optical conditions that adversely impact eye health and quality of vision. 4-7 These studies report the importance of consuming lutein—from dietary supplements and traditional dietary sources-- in increasing macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and reducing the likelihood of age-related macular and other serious conditions.
MPOD, according to the scientific literature, is an important “marker” of both macular health and visual function. Increases in MPOD are linked with a reduced likelihood of age related macular degeneration. Additionally, a recent, well-publicized intervention study in American war veterans reported that using a 10mg FloraGLO lutein supplement daily resulted in better visual function, by improving factors such as glare recovery and contrast sensitivity. 8 Studies indicate that daily intakes of 6 mg to 10 mg are beneficial for promoting eye health.
The macula is in the center of the retina, directly behind the lens. It's a tiny area made up of millions of cells that help produce the vision needed to read and to see objects clearly. Scientists generally believe that macular pigment protects the retina. The density of macular pigment has been used as a key measurement of the health of the eye. Studies show that lutein and its co-existing molecule zeaxanthin are the predominant antioxidant pigments and the only carotenoids found in the macula and lens. 9-10
